EN 13120 standard summary:

  • It is now illegal to supply or professionally install an internal window blind which does not comply with the child safety requirements of BS EN 13120:2009+A1:2014;
  • Blinds have to be safe by design – if it’s possible blinds should be cordless or cord must be concealed or tensioned;
  • Blinds must be installed properly by trained fitter. New cord / chains limitations applies;
  • Blinds must be labelled properly and product instructions have to be supplied.

There have been 28 children in the UK since 1999 that have died from accidents related to internal cords (14 since the beginning of 2010). These deaths are avoidable.

The new standard aims to protect babies and small children. It gives manufacturers and retailers rules they should comply with to make environment of our beloved a safer place.
